Project Overview

The eTransport system in Fiji plays a crucial role in facilitating cashless payments for public transportation, making travel more convenient and efficient for commuters. The Department of Information, under the Fiji Government, sought to refresh the design of eTransport cards to create a more visually consistent and user-friendly experience. The cards cater to various categories of users, including students, seniors, and general commuters. However, there were no existing working files for the designs, which meant that a complete recreation of the artwork was necessary to ensure that the cards aligned with the government's branding standards while maintaining clarity and ease of use.

Design Objectives

The primary objective of this project was to establish a cohesive and professional visual identity for the eTransport cards. Each category required clear differentiation while maintaining a unified design structure that would be recognisable to users. It was essential to create a design that was visually appealing yet simple enough to be functional for daily use. Readability was a key consideration, ensuring that all necessary information, including card numbers and branding elements, was displayed in a clear and accessible manner. Additionally, the design needed to be suitable for high-quality printing and distribution, ensuring durability and ease of reproduction.

Challenges and Solutions

One of the biggest challenges in this project was the lack of original design files. Without access to these files, it was necessary to completely regenerate the artwork for each category from scratch. This required meticulous attention to detail to ensure that the new designs matched the original branding while improving aspects such as clarity and structure. By carefully reconstructing the layout, typography, and visual elements, a set of high-quality, scalable designs was developed that could be used for future printing and digital adaptation.

Another significant challenge was the need to differentiate between various card categories while maintaining a consistent look and feel. This was addressed through a carefully considered colour-coding system, where each category was assigned a distinct colour. This approach ensured that users could easily identify their respective cards while still recognising them as part of the unified eTransport system. The typography and logo placement remained consistent across all variations, reinforcing brand recognition and maintaining a professional aesthetic.

Ensuring the final output was of high quality for printing and distribution was another crucial aspect of this project. The designs were created using vector-based artwork, allowing them to be scaled without any loss of quality. This ensured that the final prints would appear crisp and clear, with accurate colour reproduction that aligned with the intended design. Additionally, the files were optimised to meet the technical specifications required for printing, ensuring seamless production.

Final Outcome

The successful completion of this project resulted in a fully refreshed and standardised set of eTransport card designs. Each category was clearly distinguished through an effective use of colour while maintaining a strong and cohesive branding presence. The regenerated artwork not only matched but improved upon the original designs, ensuring better readability and usability for commuters. With high-resolution, print-ready files now available, the Department of Information can efficiently manage future printing and distribution without the limitations of missing design assets. This project not only modernised the visual identity of the eTransport cards but also established a strong foundation for future updates within Fiji’s public transport system.
